When people buy gym memberships, they have the best of intentions in mind, but the commitments are made in a charged emotional state. If someone attempting to get in shape is reliant upon this reaction to propel them towards working out, they are almost sure to burn out, just like with a resolution. Think of it this way: No one can laugh or cry indefinitely, and that is exactly how we know that motivation will fail.Įmotion is a chemical release yielding a physiological response. But since motivation is based on emotion, it can’t last long. For some, a New Year’s resolution can serve as a motivator. Motivation is driven by emotion and that can be positive, as long as it is used for a short-term objective. But when there is no immediate objective or goal in site, getting up that early is much harder. Personally, I have no issues getting up on a cold and dark morning to train when a competition is drawing near. It took me years of experience and research to figure out why, but I believe she was right. Years back, when I was at the Olympic Training Center in Colorado Springs, Colorado, one of the sports psychologists told me that motivation is a lie. Ask someone questions if you don't know how to use a machine or do a lift, you can find the info on youtube too! Just don't be afraid to go. (I get all my stuff at thrift stores, I am a walking fashion nightmare!) Spend your entire time just walking slowly on a treadmill if that's all you feel you can do. Prove them wrong by continuing to show up long after others stop coming.)ĭon't be afraid to go to the gym if you want to! Show up in your cruddy, mis-matched, old gym gear. (Hell, use the idea of judgmental assholes as motivation. You don't go there to impress gym assholes, you go there to improve yourself. Third, even if your gym is full of assholes, that doesn't matter. Second, most people at the gym are typically nice, and if they are not, they are assholes who you don't need to care about anyway. ![]() First off, most people at the gym are there for their own workout and won't even notice you. No one wants to be seen as that person who will come for two weeks and quit, and so you can feel even more self-conscious.ĭon't. As the new year begins, more people than ever will step into the gym for the first time, and unfortunately the idea that they are "resolutioners" makes the fear of being judged increase as well, at least in my experience.
